Sugata is the leader of the New World Discovery Club (新大陸発見部) at Tomoki's school and the best friend of Mikako Satsukitane. He is an eccentric explorer and scientist who enjoys hang-gliding and living in the wilderness. He isHe behaves in a generally deadpan manner unless it involves the "New World", or his family background.

Prior to the events of the series, he is the son of a renowned political family. When his elder brother died from a hang-gliding accident, Eishiro takes blame and is disowned by his family. Leaving his younger brother the sole heir. Since then he has followed his elder brother's footsteps in discovering a "New World" as a way of atoning for his misdeed.
