A passenger in the first class noontime car.
Marine's fiancé, a young man who is a fledgling painter. Recently, his paintings have finally been recognized by the world and are starting to sell. He is a regular customer at Marine's bar, where his various paintings are displayed. He is a weak man, and has a completely different appearance and personality from that of Marine's late husband, and if he were dressed up as a woman, he would look like a beautiful girl.
He never loses her moderation and treats even his inferiors with politeness and courtesy. Sometimes to the dismay of others, Francis is not in the habit of enjoying making people feel threatened, but that is all he can do.
He has been a close friend of Marine and Anne since Val was still alive, but since that time, Francis' honest attitude has not changed at all. At best, he respects Marine, and at worst, he remains a stranger even after their engagement and marriage have been finalized. After the prenuptial trip was decided, he was puzzled by Marine's sudden announcement that Val had come back to him. Francis has no idea what is happening to her.
How is he supposed to handle his fiancée who suddenly starts laughing (at Val's jokes), getting furious (when Val tells her off about her second marriage), and crying (when she reminisces with Val) when she tries to get him to come to his senses?
Francis is gradually becoming confused by Marine, who happily talks about things that only she and Val know (because Val, the ghost, talked, of course), including the fact that the painting for which Francis was recognized by the world was inspired by Val's music....
