At the height of his popularity, Hammer, while filming a scene, accidentally pushed co-star Manuel onto a spiked fence, which killed him. Dee Vasquez, the producer, covered up the incident and used it to blackmail Hammer into playing low-paid villain roles, including that of the Evil Magistrate.

Eventually, Hammer grew tired of this and formulated a plan to murder Vasquez and frame Powers for it. He drugged Powers with sleeping pills, then stole his Steel Samurai costume and put it on. Faking a limp that Powers sustained in a scene run-through, Hammer moved past the security cameras to implicate him. He went to Studio Two and made to kill Vasquez with the Samurai Spear prop. However, during the struggle, Vasquez accidentally pushed Hammer onto the same fence that killed Manuel, killing him.

Vasquez proceeded to cover up Hammer's death with help from Sal Manella, including driving the corpse to Studio One in an attempt to divert suspicion away from herself and onto Powers.

However, Wright eventually uncovered the truth in court.
