Hammond was considered a skilled defense attorney, and was working at the Grossberg Law Offices fifteen years prior to his murder. However, he was also known for not placing any faith in his clients, working to win cases only for himself. This put him at odds with some of his colleagues.

In 2001, Hammond represented Yanni Yogi when he was accused of the murder of Gregory Edgeworth, a case known to the police as the "DL-6 Incident". Due to the strong evidence and testimony against his client, Hammond claimed that oxygen deprivation had rendered Yogi temporarily insane. While Yogi was acquitted, his life took a turn for the worse: His fiancée killed herself, he was fired, and his friends abandoned him. Hammond later left Grossberg's company and kept a low profile for the rest of his life.

Fifteen years later, Hammond went to Gourd Lake after receiving a letter from Yogi. However, this was a trap; Yogi wanted revenge on Hammond for the insanity plea ruining his life. They met, and Yogi shot and killed Hammond inside his shack. Yogi took Hammond's coat and disguised himself as his former lawyer to carry out a plan to frame Miles, who Yogi thought was Gregory's actual killer, for Hammond's murder.

Wright represented Miles in court against Manfred von Karma and was eventually able to expose Yogi as Hammond's murderer. It was also revealed that von Karma had sent Yogi a letter with instructions on how to murder Hammond and frame Miles, and that von Karma was Gregory's killer.
