The sole witness of the murder of police officer Dustin Prince, Richard Wellington is a self-proclaimed "Drifting Virtuoso" who is looking for the "right" college.
Wellington was an arrogant and egotistical man who was about as talkative as Wendy Oldbag. Before calling him to give testimony in Maggey Byrde's trial for Prince's murder, Winston Payne described him as having a tendency to say things that would "rub people the wrong way".
Wellington was a con artist involved in a ring with about 20 others. One day, he lost his phone and attempted to find it by calling it; it was answered by Byrde. Wellington was promised his phone back, but when he went to the park to retrieve it, he found Byrde on a date with Prince, the latter in his police uniform. Fearing that Prince had accessed his phone, which contained both messages from and the phone numbers of other members in his con artist ring, Wellington panicked and attacked Prince by pushing him off a ledge to the sand below, which killed him.
As Prince had managed to take Wellington's glasses during the struggle, Wellington spent some time looking for them, to no avail. Wanting to avoid suspicion for the murder, Wellington decided to frame Byrde. He wrote the name "Maggie" in the sand with Prince's right hand, not knowing how to spell Byrde's name and that Prince was left-handed. Despite this, Byrde was arrested for the murder.
Just before Byrde's trial, Wellington called his phone again and found that it was in the possession of Byrde's defense attorney, Phoenix Wright. Wellington knocked Wright out with a fire extinguisher, giving Wright amnesia, and took the phone Wright was holding, erasing all the numbers on it in an attempt to protect himself. Despite his amnesia, Wright proceeded with his defense of Byrde, and found the contradictions in Wellington's testimony. Wellington soon found himself accused of the murder; he pointed out that his own guilt could not be proven unless Wright could demonstrate the ownership of the phone in his possession. Wright had his co-counsel Maya Fey call his own phone, which turned out to be the phone that Wellington had; the phone still in Wright's possession was Wellington's.
Realizing that he had no escape, Wellington strangled himself by pulling the scarf around his neck until his face went blue and he passed out.
