She married into a family on Kameshima shortly after the end of the Second World War at the age of 20 and has been working as an ama diver for close to 40 years, rarely missing the opening day of each diving season.
She has displayed a natural talent for diving ever since her days as an apprentice, coming to be known as "Chie the Mermaid" for the deft ease in which she moves through the water. In her heyday, she earned more money than her husband — enough to send all three of her sons to university, an achievement that she takes great pride in and also earned her considerable authority in her household.
Now a grandmother to seven, a back injury has led to her being less active than she used to be, but she is still considered one of the most experienced divers on the island. Her graceful swimming shows no signs of decline, continuing to inspire others even now. Her estimated Diver Rank is 67.
