Hourai

Old-fashioned and speaking with a heavy Kyoto accent, Hourai is bewildered by Kaguya's reluctance to leave her room and is unable to comprehend modern concepts such as podcasts and computers. She eventually calls Historia for help to resolve Kaguya's self-imposed shut-in behaviour, but her anxiety over her adopted daughter's well-being blinds her to the imminent threat to her story world from Grimoire.

After reconciling with Kaguya and understanding her adopted daughter's desire to achieve something personal, Hourai works harder towards understanding modern technology in an effort to get closer to Kaguya. Unfortunately, aside from the Libnet chat network she finds Yumetube webcasts incomprehensible and inadvertently blunders into her own webcast using Kaguya's equipment. Hourai's dialogue even uses Ateji instead of Katakana when she hears words relating to modern society and technology.

The stereotype of the overly worrying mother struggling with a teenage daughter, Hourai appreciates her story is one of the oldest in Japanese society and that it may be forgotten entirely if younger generations do not read it.
