during her investigation in the abandoned village.

Later on in the story, it is revealed that she has already been dead for years, from the infamous "Crimson hair" incident. Kanna was once loved by the villagers, however, it only lasted until the spread of an unknown epidemic. The villagers, brainwashed by Shinpu, started believing that Kanna, with her conspicuous crimson hair, is the culprit of this disease. Kanna, completely ignorant of that fact, came to Shinpu's church as advised by the villagers, and ended up being tortured to death.
