The protagonist is a former software developer at an ailing games company. After his home town suffers a devastating terrorist attack, he/she is more or less blackmailed into joining The Phoenix Custodians, under the guise of being patriotic.

Until other members of the Custodians, she/he cares deeply about the welfare of any opponents captures, and will often try to befriend them in order to gain any useful information. This doesn't endear him/her to almost everyone else, who regard the protagonist as an overbearing sanctimonious annoying do-gooder.

This trait was evident during training and caused him/her to be assigned the mission to stop Grendel and tower, as it was deemed a suicide mission for the protagonist.

The protagonist signed Grendel's "Friendship Agreement" more out of pity than anything else, and he/she realised that Grendel is lonely and doesn't have anyone to look up to. Unfortunately, not paying that much attention of what was written would soon be his/her downfall, as Grendel immediately latches onto her new "Best Friend".

The protagonist is hoping (somewhat naively) to be able to get Grendel to see reason and leave The Council before she gets too deep into the organisation and ruins her life. Unlike Grendel, he/she realises how much danger she could face in her missions.

The protagonist's problems don’'t end with Grendel, her mother or The Unseen in general. His/her organisation "The Phoenix Custodians" is another source of trouble as he/she has to deal with fellow agents who would have no compulsion about killing Unseen people on sight; keeping his/her friendship with Grendel a secret and a boss who is indifferent to him/her and is either constantly sexually harassing her (or practically ignoring him).

Add to the mix an inquisitive personal assistant with her own agena for the protagonist, and controlling parents, the protagonist's life is practically not his/her own.

Continually fails his/her "Interrogation Exam", which is designed to gauge how ruthlessly an agent can be during interrogations.
