숲속 외딴 마을로 여행을 떠나는 매디와 타라의 기대치는 낮기만 합니다. 두 사람은 초자연적인 현상을 다루는 인기 온라인 쇼를 운영하고 있지만, 지금까지는 그저 허울뿐인 눈속임에 불과했기 때문입니다. 고풍스러운 마을 아이젠펠트(Eysenfeld)로부터 초대장을 받았을 때도 그들은 이번에도 별다를 게 없을 거라 예상했습니다. 하지만 곧 마을 사람들이 무언가 비밀을 숨기고 있다는 사실이 드러나기 시작합니다. 매디는 숲속에서 자신의 상상력이 만들어낸 산물이라고 확신하는 기괴한 짐승들을 목격합니다. 숲속의 불빛들은 반짝거리며 일렁이다가도 가까이 다가가면 사라져 버립니다.
시간이 지나면서 매디는 그 불빛들이 애비게일이라는 소녀에게서 나온다는 사실을 알게 됩니다. 정확히는, 소녀의 유령이죠. 애비게일은 수백 년 전 마을 사람들에 의해 숲의 신을 달래기 위한 제물로 바쳐졌습니다. 매디는 아이젠펠트에 머무는 동안 애비게일과 가까워지는 데 시간을 쏟고, 결국 그녀를 숲에 묶어둔 저주를 풀겠다고 약속합니다.
